Function / Content

This series consists of the master index to Alleviation of distress files which include the following welfare services; provision and assessment of child maintenance, emergency assistance relating to accommodation and food, assistance relating to housing including payments for legal representation in eviction proceedings brought against clients by Housing Commission and payment of rental arrears, assistance to clients to purchase furniture and clothing. Clients who received welfare services at this time included children who were classed as State Children, wards, neglected children placed under the guardianship of the Director, Welfare Branch; people released from prison; unwed mothers; New Australians (immigrants from Greece and Italy); and deserted wives and children. The files relate to all regions including Darwin, Borroloola, Croker Island, Tiwi Islands, Batchelor, Katherine, Tennant Creek, and Alice Springs. The index consists of 37 fields collecting the following information: box number; file number; file title; date range of file; name of adult client; alternative client names( e.g. alternative spellings, aliases); other adult client names referred to in reports/investigations on file; welfare services provided to adult; adult client name if different from primary client; name and location of welfare institution where adult was placed; name and location of other institution where adult was placed; date or year of birth; sex of client; Aboriginal, Non-Aboriginal or not specified; photographs on file; birth mother name; birth father name; sibling names; spouse name; children of client (not adopted); children of client (adopted) and jurisdiction of adoption; services provided to a child or children; name of child clients; any other names or aliases the child is known by; child date or year of birth; sex of child; child Aboriginal, Non-Aboriginal or not specified; photographs of child or children on file; child birth mother name; child birth father name; child
